Upstage Limited is proud to partner with Lost State of Mind on 'Sanaa Lab,' a creative residency program designed to support emerging dancers while exploring the intersection of mental health and the performing arts.
Sanaa Lab was initiated by Lost State of Mind, a Nairobi-based organization that uses artistic expression to advance conversations around mental well-being. The residency provides a structured space for young dancers to train, develop original work, and build their artistic voice. As a facilitating partner, Upstage brings artistic direction, teaching support, and technical resources to help make the program impactful.
The first cohort of Sanaa Lab graduated on 4th October 2025, culminating in a powerful showcase of original performances. Over three months, the dancers not only honed their craft but also gained critical tools to sustain their artistic journeys. The graduation marked a meaningful milestone in the program's growth.
“We’re excited to be part of Sanaa Lab’s journey,” said Adam Chienjo, Executive Director at Upstage. “ Beyond supporting the residency, we’re opening up pathways for these dancers to continue growing, by connecting them with other artists, mentors, and live performance opportunities through Upstage.”
Graduates of Sanaa Lab will now have the opportunity to plug into Upstage’s wider programming, including upcoming projects like Linearity, a collaborative international tour with Swiss choreographer Joshua Monten.
This partnership reflects Upstage’s continued commitment to inclusive creative development and artist-centered learning.
