In June and July 2025, Upstage successfully delivered a series of inclusive community-based workshops as part of the 6th edition of Dance Life Festival. The workshops brought together diverse communities across Nairobi, offering a wide range of dance styles and creative learning opportunities for artists and aspiring dancers. This year’s sessions included:
Breakdance meets Contemporary Dance at Kangemi Social Hall
Tap Dance Workshop led by Tapatapa Dance Group at Project Elimu, Kibera
Action to Creation workshop led by Leadinho Chucrani (DRC) at Kayole Social Hall
Fundamental Freedom Dance and Artist Talk at Artzone Studios, Baricho Road
Mixed Ability Masterclass and Artist Talk at Goethe-Institut, Nairobi
The workshops served over 100 participants across all sessions, including youth, children, adults, and dancers with disabilities. Sessions were led by both local and international facilitators, combining technical training with open dialogue on creative practice, identity, and expression.
As part of our commitment to accessibility, the workshops were free to attend and held in under-resourced neighborhoods including Kibera, Kangemi, and Kayole. This approach helped ensure that emerging artists from marginalized communities could access high-quality training and connect with broader professional networks.
The workshops were supported by a generous network of partners, including Africalia, Goethe-Institut Kenya, Pro Helvetia, Project Elimu, and Artzone Studios.
These sessions remain a vital part of Dance Life Festival’s mission to grow artistic talent, foster community, and drive inclusion through performance and movement.
